Advantages of Coarse Threads

✅ Are less prone to stripping and cross threading

✅ Less susceptible to being damaged and can still work with 'nicks' in the thread

✅ Faster to install than fine-pitch threads

Disadvantages of Coarse Threads

❌ Not as strong as a corresponding fine-pitch thread

❌ More prone to loosening under vibration

❌ Not suitable for threading into thin-walled parts

Metric Thread Table - Fine Pitch (M1-M64)

Advantages of Fine Threads

✅ Size for size a fine pitch thread is stronger than a coarse pitch thread in both in tension and shear.

✅ The smaller pitch allows for finer adjustment for applications that require precise adjustment.

✅ Fine threads are more easily tapped into hard materials and thin-walled pipes.

✅ Less torque is required to achieve the same level of preload compared to coarse threads.

✅ Fine threads have a smaller incline to coarse threads so they are less likely to loosen.

Disadvantages of Fine Threads

❌ Fine threads are more susceptible to being damaged from contaminates.

❌ More care has to be taken when assembling parts with fine threads, making them unsuitable for high-speed assembly.

❌ Parts require longer thread engagement.
